Nintendo Wii Long Range Sensor Bar - Large Room Solution
Minimize

So, you have a Nintendo Wii in a large room, with a projector or other large screen and your Wiimote & sensor bar wont work correctly over a long distance. We have a solution to this common problem.

The Wii sensor bar is actually just two groups of five infra red LEDs with the two groups spaced slightly apart so the camera in the end of your Wii remote can "see" the two separate groups of LEDs and calculate your movements from this.

The problem over large distances is simply that the two groups are too close together and the Wiimote cannot see them apart. Therefore all you have to do is separate the groups by a few feet and the problem is solved. Separating by 1 meter (~3 feet) increases the range to a whopping 10m (33 feet), enough for almost even the largest room.

Without the need for buying components, it is easily possible to separate your existing sensor bar into two halves. All is required is a 1m (~3 feet) piece of lightweight two core cable.

How To Modify Your Wii Sensor Bar For Long Range
Minimize

OK so here goes.

  1. Disconnect your sensor bar from your Wii.
  2. Remove the 6 screws attaching the cover. (Use a pair of long nose plyers to remove the screws, or you can drill them out if you really have to)
  3. Gently remove the 2 LED circuit boards and cables.
  4. Temporarily replace the lid.
  5. Saw the sensor bar in half using a hack saw in the same location as in the images.
  6. Cut the white ribbon cable in the middle, split and strip back exposing 4 wires (2x2) expose about 5mm of wire.
  7. Cut and strip back your 1m (~3') extension wire.
  8. Solder the extension wire the the ribbon cables taking care to ensure polarity. (If you don't have a soldering iron you can tightly twist the cables together)
  9. Tape the joints with insulating tape so they don't short or touch the circuit board.
  10. Re-assemble everything back together.
  11. Use glue or tape to hold the lid if you have drilled out the screw heads.
  12. Your done, Enjoy!

Hi. I came across your page while Googling for a way to extend the WiiMote's range. Looks awesome, I just watched your YouTube video, too. But the 2 photos on the site aren't loading. Can you please check it out? Thanks, and thanks for sharing your idea. Submitted By: RenegadeX
